Debuting on Broadway in 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A film version of the stage production was recently released on Disney Plus. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is said to have labeled this hip-hop story of the Founding Fathers “the best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.” But Hamilton is much more than an artistic success. The New Yorker called it “an achievement of historical and cultural reimagining.” For the younger generation in particular, the music and the story are shaping how America’s founding and the founding generation are perceived.

In what he hopes will be a discussion of general interest, Justice William Dato will share his thoughts on the broader implications of Hamilton as Americans continually reevaluate who We are as a People. His comments will blend musical theater with American history and popular culture with constitutional law in painting a landscape that is both personal in some of its details and universal in its application.
